Project
Summary
The Jack Northrop Elementary School was designed to replace an adjacent temporary school. The multi-wing design concept of the plan alludes to the daring V-wing planes created by the school’s namesake in the late 1940s. The central node of the school contains the reception, administration, library and computer center. Classroom wings branching from the central reception point serve different grade levels, including a separate area for Kindergarten. All classrooms allow direct access to the exterior. An adjacent wing contains a multi-purpose room with stage and kitchen facilities. The 22 classrooms in the core building and 14 additional classrooms in outlying buildings house approximately 900 students. The site amenities include separate bus and auto dropoff zones on different streets, large grass play areas that can be shared with the adjacent middle school and hardscape play areas, all laid out for efficient supervision by staff.
