Project
Summary

At its opening, Rolling Hills High School accommodated 2000 students and 125 faculty on a 38-acre site at Hawthorne Blvd and Silver Spur Road. Each individual grade operates independently in a self-contained school and students spend much of their school year under the guidance and camaraderie of the team of teachers assigned to their grade. The design choice was made to face the problems of area limitations and large enrollment. All four high school classes share common administration, library, and athletic facilities. There are football, baseball, softball, and track fields; tennis and handball courts; and a large gymnasium. The central administration building is at the front of the campus, housing the principal, vice principal, health office, and a student store. The circular library is designed so that entire classes may be brought into the building for instruction when their course of study calls for prolonged research. Outdoors, a stage backs up to the library and fronts on a turf-covered step-down amphitheater which fills the open area between the two large teaching compounds.
