Flewelling & Moody designed the Olympic Swimming and Diving Facility as a venue for the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles and for University and community use afterward. The National Spa and Pool Institute awarded it a Gold Medal Design Award for excellence and innovation. Challenged to design a “fast” 50-meter pool, the firm and its aquatic design consultant used depth, bulkheads, advanced perimeter gutter design, and efficient methods for filtered water to re-enter the pool to diminish adverse currents during competitions.
