1940s
In the late 30s and early 40s the firm was involved in the city’s New Deal–era public housing program. In 1941-43, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) constructed 10 public housing developments for $16 million, two of which Flewelling was involved: Romona Gardens and Aliso Village. Located in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, Aliso Village was the largest housing project west of the Mississippi upon its completion in 1943. In 1945, Walter L. Moody joined Flewelling’s firm after working several decades primarily in residential design. Other notable projects of this decade include Santa Ana Junior College and Newport City Hall.
